"What extraordinary figures."

"Not at all. They simply preserve the proportions of six-fortieths, eight-fortieths, and eight-fortieths, which those funds take in the residue to begin with. Of course there are all kinds of other provisions, trying to provide for deaths in a peculiar order. But as far as you and I are concerned, we've got definite vested interests in our shares of our respective funds. That's to say, if you survive your mother, you're bound to come into two-thirds of her fund absolutely, and even if you die before her, you can leave the reversion of it as you like by will—or assign it by deed—which means you can borrow on the strength of it, or sell it. Laymen don't generally understand these things. They're apt to think if they don't get the money outright, they've got to wait for the death of the one who has the life-interest before they can do anything. That's not so at all, unless the gift is contingent on their surviving the life tenant. And in our cases, it isn't."
